Beckleshele is surrounded by moorlands in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and you may enjoy:--

  • Geological exploration – visit the Burtreeford disturbance

Local Attractions

Visit the award winning Killhope Lead Mining Museum shop and café. Take a guided tour deep underground and learn how the lead was mined, processed and transported.

Ireshopeburn – The Weardale Museum and High House Chapel, the worlds oldest Methodist Chapel still in continuous weekly use. Wesley preached here and the adjoining small folk museum includes a Wesley room, local history and mineral displays.

Stanhope – the “capital” of Weardale, visit the Durham Dales Centre for information on local events, craft shopping and a coffee break. Take a train journey to Wolsingham on the Weardale Railway.

Killhope Wheel

Frosterley – participate in community events in the eco classroom in the Harehope Quarry project.

Durham City – the small, historic and beautiful university city of Durham has a castle, shops and a famous Cathedral.

Hexham - a market town with an Abbey dating from 674AD and a market held in its shadow every Tuesday.

Alston – the highest market town in England and the start of the South Tyne Railway.
